Syrian Refugees in Slemani Governorate

To house the large number of refugees, the KRG and UNHCR are currently building another large camp in Slemani Governorate. Slemani hosts Kurdistan’s smallest number of refugees, with an estimated 24,835 refugees registered with UNHCR. This number is subject to change as the daily influx of refugees to Slemani increases. The only camp in the Governorate is the Arbat camp, which houses 2,800 individuals. There are 600 families currently living in that camp, while the rest live in Slemani city and its surroundings, such as Chamchamal, Said Sadiq, and elsewhere. A new refugee camp is being built in Barika, south of Arbat, and is designed to host all 25,500 refugees. This new camp is better equipped with all essentials necessary for survival during the cold winter months as well as the provision of health and educational facilities, clean water and sanitation, and adequate shelter.
