Travelling to Kurdistan

Regular scheduled flights to the Kurdistan Region by Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines, Gulf Air, Royal Jordanian, Etihad, Middle East Airlines and Iraqi Airways.

Charter flights to the Kurdistan Region are operated by Atlas Jet from Istanbul, Air Berlin, Air Sweden, Viking Airline and others.

The Kurdistan Region's airports
The Kurdistan Region has two international airports: Erbil International Airport and Suleimaniah International Airport. Most flights from Europe and the Middle East fly directly to Kurdistan, without going via Baghdad. Several IATA members scheduled carriers already fly to Erbil, and more IATA airlines are expected to start flights there. Several charter companies also operate flights to Erbil or Suleimaniah.

Checking in at Erbil and Suleimaniah international airports
Passengers are advised to arrive at the airport at least 2 and 1/2 hours before their departures, to allow sufficient time to board the shuttle bus and go through the security check point to the departure terminal. See also the airport website www.erbilairport.com

Archaeological sites in the Kurdistan Region

Kurdistan has at least 1,307 known archaeological sites.

Among the most famous is the Erbil citadel, the oldest continuously inhabited settlement in the world, which has been settled since 6,000 BC.
Another is the Shanidar cave, where nine Neanderthal skeletons were found dating between 60-80,000 years. The cave is in Bradost mountain, in Erbil province.
