BBC
BBC Radio 4 - Janet Hamilton last spring visited the Kurdistan Region to follow a historic mountain road built by her father, Archibald Hamilton. She went with her husband and two sons to trace the road that her civil engineer father built in in 1928-1932 with local engineers and workers.
Running through gorges, hills and near waterfalls, the Hamilton Road is a major tourist attraction in the Kurdistan Region in Iraq. In 1937 Hamilton wrote a memoir of his experience entitled 'Road through Kurdistan: Travels in Northern Iraq'. In it he recounts the nature of the country where he built the road, and the people of the area.
Michael Howard is a journalist and travel writer who wrote for the Economist and the Guardian from Iraq from 2000-2009. Michael first travelled to Kurdistan in 2000 to trace his roots and he’s since been regularly visiting the region.
On BBC Radio 4's travel programme Excess Baggage, Janet Hamilton and Michael Howard recount their experiences of visiting the Kurdistan Region and its attraction for both domestic and foreign tourists.
